STORY ARSENAL - Mark Sylvester's Sunday story bank Snapshot of 29 seeds as of October 31, 2026. Mark's private bank is canonical; this copy is republished as new seeds land. A running bank of Mark's story ideas as they come up during the week. Ask "what are my Sunday story ideas?" and the current list comes back, with the details that made each one worth telling. Public read-only copy of Mark Sylvester's story bank, published at his request so his AI writing tools can read it. Snapshot of 29 seeds as of October 31, 2026; his private bank remains canonical, and this page is republished as new seeds land. ============================================================ STORY SEEDS ============================================================ 1. Claude to Kajabi: upskilling myself to publish ------------------------------------------------- How Mark built a skill to handle Coastal's writing: getting pieces out of Claude, into Kajabi and onto the internet, replacing tedious manual publishing steps. Source: iMessage, Oct 24, 2026. 2. Building statements, and what you're building ------------------------------------------------ Possibly two stories: the idea of a building statement, and what you're building. Sources found in his email: Mark's own statement (Jun 14, 2024 - "I am building a network of multi-generational thought leaders by integrating creativity, technology, and storytelling to empower voices and drive change," with its What/How/Why breakdown), a "Cathy building statement" (Apr 2023), Morgan Watt's "Building Statement" thread (Jul 18, 2026), the Oct 2 Coastal OS worksession recap ("Coastal positioning and building statement") and the Oct 22 Claudia recap, where a building statement is the "I help" statement people leave the Envision step with. Dropbox (searched Oct 25): the Mixed Grill Writing folder has a Building Statement folder holding the Oct 2025 podcast episode-15 assets ("Your Mission Statement Is Theater"); Reed's Building Statement Module (EVERYWHERE Studio v7, Apr 8, 2026) makes the three-slot format - building the thing, by the method, so that the impact - step 1 of onboarding; a Storytelling School homework doc for Jeremy and Michelle's Vitality Collective carries a "Mark version": "We are building a revolution in health optimization, to empower individuals to sustain their vitality and pursue lifelong passions, by integrating cutting-edge health methodologies"; and Duey's 2022 Masters Circle statement: "I am building a movement of uncivilized therapists by challenging the premise of domesticated therapy." Source: iMessage, Oct 24, 2026. 3. What a 40-year-old should know --------------------------------- Multigenerational communication: the skills a 40-year-old should have - soft, hard, social and technical - then expanded to 50, 60, 70 and 80, and back down to 30, 20, 10 and 5. Update from the HB afternoon (Oct 24): this is now next week's essay. HB showed Mark Robert Heinlein's specialization quote ("a human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog...") and Mark said he will credit HB for showing it to him. Source: iMessage, Oct 24, 2026. 4. A week in Centaur, Cyborg and Conjurer mode ---------------------------------------------- For Saturday, Oct 31: an article inspired by hearing Ethan Mollick's book, reflecting on how Mark actually works after a week of tracking his AI work in the three modes - with time graphs where the evidence supports them and suggestions for readers. What the pattern means is still open; Mollick's thinking gets explored as the week develops. The week's work log lives in the modes report (tracked separately). Source: iMessage, Oct 24, 2026. 5. The Centaur, Cyborg and Conjurer report ------------------------------------------ The report itself as a Sunday story: how Mark's actual work maps onto Ethan Mollick's three modes of working with AI - centaur, cyborg and conjurer - researched and delivered Oct 24. Mark asked for this line in the bank with the report linked right here, so it is one tap away: the Centaur, Cyborg and Conjurer report. Source: iMessage, Oct 24, 2026. ============================================================ MARK'S STORIES FROM THE AFTERNOON WITH HB ============================================================ [Note] About this batch. Seeds 6-18 come from a long conversation between Mark and HB on October 24, 2026 in Goleta, transcribed from a voice memo with no speaker labels and rough speech-to-text. Attribution is tentative, some names may be misheard, garbled passages were left out rather than guessed, and claims of completed work are the speaker's conversational account, not verified. The private review of the afternoon has the full picture. 6. The year to write -------------------- Mark and his wife name their years instead of making resolutions, then carry the name on engraved metal cards (wallet, bathroom, desk) and have clients name theirs each November. Two years ago she pushed back: "you're a coach's coach, but we don't know what you think about anything" - so he named it the year to write. He had learned AI while cooking for seven families during COVID (GPTs for menus and orders), turned a Harvard-debate-team prompting trick into a writing practice, and built a folder of 87 markdown essays. Tomorrow is his 98th consecutive Sunday essay; he has never missed one. Friends said "you should sell that," which became IdeasOut - get the ideas out of your head so they can get out in the world - taken to market four weeks ago. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 8. Cork on the water -------------------- When Mark arrived from ten years as a chef wanting only to make pictures, Larry told him: be a cork on the water - as things rise, you will rise with them. Years later Dennis Kagan, their first board member, heard the story and added the coda: "You know we fired him three times, and three times he popped back up. He's the cork on the water." Larry died recently (pancreatic cancer, after a clot from a helicopter-skiing trip); Mark heard only afterward, and the advice is how Larry gets remembered. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 9. The pocket demo ------------------ At Siggraph in the Wavefront days, Bubba did the same front-of-booth talk every hour while Mark improvised in the back: "Reach in your pocket, take something out - we'll model that." Thirty years later it is the same move: instead of long sales letters for IdeasOut, every other week Mark runs a live 45-minute session - bring an idea, and it gets solved right there in front of you. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 10. The sabbatical sound system ------------------------------- Mark told this one back to HB: years ago, walking into Mark's half-built house on the mesa, HB described his dream sabbatical project - a voice-activated sound system in every room that knows you and follows you as you move. The constraint was the point: he could only build it from parts already in the house. The punchline landed in the telling: "And now we have Alexa." Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026 (Mark's retelling of HB's old idea). 11. The night before you're 13 ------------------------------ Mark's grandson turned 13; the night before, Mark pulled him into the studio and recorded a 45-minute conversation. What will be different? Then the frame: how many years was it from birth to now? Twelve - thirteen tomorrow. And how long until you're not a teenager? (The transcript garbles the answer - "it's only nine" - so the exact runway number is uncertain.) Then: picture sitting here at 19, the night before your 20th, looking back - what would you tell your 13-year-old self? The boy looked at him for a long moment and said: "I got it." Connects to seed 3's knowledge-by-decade essay. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 12. The periodic table of innovation, rebuilt in 90 minutes ----------------------------------------------------------- Five years ago Mark deconstructed innovation into a periodic table - elements, then molecules and formulas that solve specific problems. This week, spotting a gorgeous TED book-club book on the elements on his bookcase, he asked his AI chief of staff to find all of that old work wherever it lived and build an encyclopedia of it - and described getting back 340 pages with diagrams and citations about 90 minutes later. "How long would that have taken? You wouldn't have done it." Note: this is Mark's conversational account, not a verified or delivered document - the underlying Northstarr archive is still behind the blocked Dropbox sign-in, and no such draft has been delivered. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 13. The university club lunch ----------------------------- Coastal Intelligence's origin: Mark's partner searched LinkedIn for everyone in Santa Barbara with AI in their title and invited them to lunch at the university club - bring a friend. Twelve showed up: authors, professors, consultants, Starbucks' retired chief digital officer. One of those rooms where you keep your mouth shut until you hear everyone else. The lunches repeated through the spring, and by May three of them made it a thing - a first year of downtown mixers, then "could you come talk to us?" became "could you help us?" Now Coastal is the AI trainer of record for Santa Barbara County's 21 departments and is agentifying the food bank (maybe 50,000 meals a day). Mark describes the partnership as Crosby, Stills and Nash - they perform together and keep solo careers. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 14. The 27-handicap test ------------------------ Mark's new test for what AI actually understands. A kidnapper demands $50,000 at the 17th hole of the municipal course; the husband shows up 90 minutes late, and when the kidnapper explodes, he says: "Give me a break - I have a 27 handicap." He played the whole round first. Mark asked an AI, with no searching, why the joke is funny - and it got it: the man prioritized golf over rescuing his wife. To do that, Mark points out, it needs a model of the world - strained marriages, obsessed golfers, the works. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 15. The Mobius mind ------------------- A frame that came out of the conversation (likely HB naming how Mark works): the right brain paints, the left brain makes the sentences, and AI can serve as the outsourced left brain with a hard red line between creativity and execution. But a chef cannot work that way - he dips in and out of both sides constantly. So: the Mobius mind, where both sides turn out to be connected to the same point. A cousin to seed 4's centaur, cyborg and conjurer. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026 (attribution tentative). 16. The Petri dish problem -------------------------- From Amazon's ideation days, a structural flaw HB said they never fully cracked: the person with the passion and the idea is often not the right person to lead the team that builds it. Mark's answer is a Petri dish: the agar is the culture, the idea is what gets dropped in, and it either grows or goes away - while the inventor's name stays on it regardless. He points to EOS's visionary/integrator split making the same point: a visionary may have zero role in implementation, and that is fine as long as everyone knows it. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 17. Kymberlee's board-breaking at TED University ------------------------------------------------ Kymberlee taught board-breaking at TED University to a room that included a Nobel laureate and the founder of Flickr; Jeff Bezos got up and broke his board with the famous laugh. Afterward a man asked her to come teach it at his company and she declined - it was just a thing she did once. The reveal: the man was Jeff Bezos, and she had no idea. (Told by the person holding the wood for her - likely Mark - attribution tentative.) Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 18. Master Wheaton's last words ------------------------------- The day before the teller's black belt test, over coffee, he asked Master Wheaton for final words - something to carry in. Wheaton got very serious: "Don't fuck up." Companion joke told with it: the student who has contemplated the wind in the leaves, the fox stalking its prey, water flowing around rocks - yes, master, all of it - and the master replies: "Stop doing all that shit. Start training." Attribution unresolved: the teller says Kymberlee introduced him to Master Wheaton when he was 50 (two second-degree black belts), which points to Mark, but the transcript does not confirm it. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. ============================================================ HB'S STORIES FROM THAT AFTERNOON ============================================================ [Note] Attribution tentative. Seeds 19-25 are stories HB told about his own life, as transcribed. They are preserved as leads Mark may want to reference or ask HB about - not as verified accounts, and some names may be misheard. 19. The 42-year-old joke ------------------------ Telling an unremarkable joke at dinner, HB knew two things with total certainty: he was eight years old reading it in a joke book, and in the ~42 years since, it had never once left his lips. Eight-year-old HB stored it and waited for the trigger. Told during a long riff on memory - the forgetting curve (Ebbinghaus, 1800s), spaced repetition, the Anki app that reinforces a memory the moment you are about to lose it, and a memory researcher whose name the transcript garbles. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 20. "Tell him not to do it" --------------------------- First week at Lucasfilm's Computer Division (before it was Pixar): HB's four-line shell script kept crashing the shared timeshare machine for everyone. His boss (transcribed as "Ed Capell" - likely Ed Catmull) walked him to Sam Lefler, a Unix pioneer whose name is "on one out of four pages" of the manuals. Lefler never looked up. His entire solution: "Tell him not to do it." Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 21. The impossible engineers ---------------------------- Two from HB's management years. The open-source founder who petitioned the FCC to drop the 100-year-old Morse code requirement - and won - and who refused to say "C++," insisting on his own name for the language in front of clients. And Andreas at Pixar, who restyled everyone's code to his own taste, deleting characters wholesale - which sparked a tool idea HB thinks should still exist: the code is just a representation, so let every engineer see it in their own style. Your lens, your code. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 22. The Navy SEALs of SGI ------------------------- At Silicon Graphics (1994-95), HB was sent around the company to hand-pick the best graphics programmers for the Performer team - six to ten people whose work drove about half of SGI's sales: military rendering, medical rendering, flight simulation. The ego came free. His lasting management lesson is the forced-ranking absurdity: his worst performer was better than other teams' best, and someone still had to land at the bottom. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 23. Look Inside the Book ------------------------ At Amazon, HB was buying children's books for his two- or three-year-old and kept finding them misdescribed - so he scanned one himself and showed Jeff: "That's great. Go do a million bucks." It became Amazon's most expensive project to date (books de-bound, hand-scanned by companies in the Philippines and the US). Asked at the board presentation whether they were good to go, he pulled out a "Scanning for Dummies"-style book, flipped the pages, and said: "Yeah, we're good." His insistence on the highest-resolution scans, on a hunch, is why those images later became the Kindle books. He also ran Amazon's first digital music project and later held the title Prime Minister of Ideas. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 24. The Richard Garfield interview ---------------------------------- Building Amazon's game studio - he was the only person there who actually played games - HB was warned about a candidate: brilliant, autistic, will not look at you or talk. Richard Garfield, inventor of Magic: The Gathering. As advertised, until HB mentioned noticing the game's dedication to Cosmic Encounter, his own favorite game since college. Garfield transformed: "Cosmic Encounter - that's an inspiration for everything I've done," and invited him over to test games. Everybody has a code; find it. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. 25. The management event horizon -------------------------------- Why HB left Amazon. "Do both" is a fine strategy for a CEO, but somewhere between the CEO and the engineer at the keyboard, someone has to decide the order - and whoever takes that bullet is miserable. His manager would not prioritize and would wake engineers at 3 a.m. for bugs that could wait until Monday. "You don't get to do that as often as you want. If you keep making me do that, eventually I lose the whole staff." The manager kept making him do it. Source: HB conversation, Oct 24, 2026. ============================================================ ADDED OCT 25 ============================================================ [Note] Dictation matched to the deck. Mark dictated the story seed by voice, then explicitly named CORA and said he wants to "call into being" the idea as a companion to IDEVA. The matching source deck was found in Mark's Coastal Intelligence email: Mike's "AI Assessment - Foodbank of Santa Barbara County" presentation PDF (sent Oct 13, 2026, 35 slides, slide 12, "How work connects"). Which deck Mark meant is a match, not confirmed by him. 26. CORA: from meetings to action, a companion to IDEVA ------------------------------------------------------- Slide 12 of Mike's deck, "The opportunity is in the handoffs," runs four steps. Capture: meeting notes don't consistently become Asana tasks. Organize: content scattered across systems and the S-Drive. Retrieve: board, grant and impact reports rebuilt by hand. Act: donor follow-up depends on manual detection. That fits Mark's dictation (the garbled "S Dr. retrieve board" is the S-Drive and Retrieve steps). The first letters spell C-O-R-A. Mark has now explicitly named CORA and wants to "call into being" the idea as a companion to IDEVA. The deck supplies the four steps but does not name CORA or define its relationship to IDEVA. Mark's framing: a recipe for how we go from meetings to action. This captures the concept, not an implementation or launch plan. The slide also notes some system separation is deliberate and must be preserved. Source: iMessage dictation, Oct 25, 2026; deck from Mike, Oct 13, 2026. ============================================================ ADDED OCT 31 ============================================================ [Note] Four from the conversation with Ger. Mark supplied these four Sunday stories himself on Oct 31, from his conversation with Ger, and framed them as separate from Citizen Zero (the Oct 30 seed from the same conversation, kept in its own brief). His wording is preserved. 27. The Elder Opens the Curtains -------------------------------- Theme: The difference between getting older and becoming an elder. A mentor helps you climb the stairs, but an elder opens the curtains and shows you what's possible beyond them. Becoming an elder isn't about age; it's about recognizing the responsibility to share wisdom, perspective, and understanding with others. Source: iMessage, Oct 31, 2026, from Mark's conversation with Ger. 28. Who Teaches the Children? ----------------------------- Theme: How values pass from one generation to the next. If our fundamental values begin forming before we're five or six, who's responsible for shaping them, especially when parents are overwhelmed and traditional institutions play a smaller role? This story explores whether grandparents, elders, and communities need to become more intentional about passing values to the next generation. Source: iMessage, Oct 31, 2026, from Mark's conversation with Ger. 29. Knowledge Isn't Understanding --------------------------------- Theme: The difference between having information and developing wisdom. For twenty dollars a month, AI can give us access to an extraordinary amount of knowledge, but does that mean we understand anything more deeply? This story explores why understanding requires experience, reflection, judgment, and the ability to recognize what really matters. Source: iMessage, Oct 31, 2026, from Mark's conversation with Ger. 30. Trust in a Changed World ---------------------------- Theme: How technology changes behavior while testing our values. The iPhone, COVID, and artificial intelligence have fundamentally changed how we communicate, work, and relate to one another. Yet beneath these transformations lies an enduring question: Are we building a world based on trust, or allowing technology to reshape our relationships without examining the values behind them? Source: iMessage, Oct 31, 2026, from Mark's conversation with Ger. ============================================================ COMMISSIONED RESEARCH ============================================================ Age-by-age skills research -------------------------- The research behind seed 3, commissioned Oct 24: an exhaustive look at what a person should know at each age from 5 to 80, delivered as a Google Doc. Running as its own research task - it feeds the story, it is not the story itself. ============================================================ HOW THIS BANK WORKS ============================================================ Ideas land as Mark mentions them -------------------------------- Each seed keeps its date and his own words. New mentions are added to this same page. Seeds are not tasks ------------------- Nothing here is drafted until Mark picks a story. Today's 90-minute writing session is tracked separately in Taskmaster under Writing. [Note] Captured so far. This bank holds the story ideas Mark has shared, plus stories told to him, since October 24, 2026. Earlier dictated stories join the list as they are recovered from his messages and files. 30 seeds captured so far: 1-5 from Mark's messages, 6-18 from the afternoon with HB (mostly Mark's; one teller unresolved), 19-25 HB's stories (attribution tentative), 26 from Mark's Oct 25 dictation and CORA concept confirmation, matched to Mike's deck, 27-30 from Mark's Oct 31 message with four Sunday stories from his conversation with Ger. Sources checked October 31, 2026. ============================================================ STATUS BOARD (added October 31, 2026) ============================================================ WRITING: No active work-in-progress in this snapshot.
